Hello Band Families!
I'm Emily Focht Kuersten. I have been teaching music at LUSD since 2014 but have been teaching a variety of subjects since 2010. I have a bachelor's degree in music instruction with minors in German and physics, a master of music in education degree from the American Band College and have teaching credentials in music, general science, and multiple subjects.
Before coming to Loomis, I substitute taught in Laguna Beach, Ca, recieved awards for my teaching of the Y.E.S. Properties of Motion Program at Disneyland Park, and taught English as a Second Language for the Disney Company in Shanghai, China (fun fact: that's the Shanghai skyline in the tile of this page!). In the past three years I have had the honor of performing in a large ensemble with trumpet legend Doc Severinsen, the internationally renowned Canadian Brass ensemble, and singer Peter Hollens. I also had the honor of performing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day in June of 2019.
This year I will be teaching 5th and 6th grade band at Loomis Grammar, H. Clarke Powers, and Placer, Penryn, and Franklin Elementary schools. I will also continue as director of the Jr. Eagle Band.
Parents are always welcome in my classroom - we'd love to have you come play with us! Contact me if you'd like to visit or have any other questions: firstname.lastname@example.org.
